Always Crete.
The name says it all. Agia Galini translates from Greek as Holy Serenity — and the village has earned that name a thousand times over. Perched on the southern coast of Crete, in the Rethymno prefecture, it looks directly south over the Libyan Sea toward the coast of Africa. The light here is different. The pace here is different.
Once a modest fishing village serving the inland settlements of Melambes, Saktouria and the Amari Valley, Agia Galini grew quietly into one of South Crete's most beloved resorts — without ever losing its essential character. The harbour is still home to working fishing boats. The kafenia still serve raki in the mornings. The evenings still belong to music, fresh seafood and the particular pleasure of having nowhere else to be.
This is not the Crete of cruise ships and resort bracelets. It is the Crete of fishing boats, mountain roads, and evenings that begin after sunset.

More than a dozen beaches.
Each one different.
The south coast of Crete is not one beach — it is a succession of them, each with its own character. From the organised Blue Flag beach in Agia Galini to the wild sand dunes of Agios Pavlos and the legendary palm forest at Preveli, the variety is extraordinary. All are reachable within minutes by car from Galini Breeze.
Three thousand years of
extraordinary history
South Crete is not just beautiful — it is one of the most historically significant landscapes in Europe. The Minoan civilisation, Europe's oldest, flourished on these plains. The Romans chose this coast for their capital. Ancient gorges, monasteries and sea caves tell the story of an island that has been at the centre of the world for millennia.
All of the sites below are reachable from Galini Breeze as a day trip — most are within 30 to 45 minutes by car, along roads that are themselves spectacular.
The Minoan Palace of Phaistos — 30 minutes from Galini Breeze
The second largest Minoan palace complex on Crete, set on a commanding hilltop overlooking the Messara Plain and Mount Psiloritis. Inhabited from 3,500 BC, it remains one of Europe's most remarkable archaeological sites.
The ancient capital of Roman Crete, stretching across an olive grove. Here you'll find the famous Gortyn Law Code — the most complete legal text of the ancient Greek world, carved into stone around 450 BC.
A dramatic limestone gorge where the Kourtaliotis River disappears underground and re-emerges as a powerful waterfall at its base — with no visible source. The gorge leads directly to Preveli Beach and its famous palm forest.
A 16th-century Venetian-era monastery perched above the Libyan Sea. A shelter for Cretan resistance fighters in World War II, it now houses rare icons and offers some of the most dramatic sea views on the island.
The sea caves at Matala — carved into the clifftop above a beautiful sandy bay — were home to a legendary community of hippies in the 1960s and 70s. Today the village celebrates this history every June at the Matala Beach Festival.
From Agia Galini harbour, daily boat tours reach the nearby sea caves, swimming spots as well as the secluded beaches of Agios Georgios, Prasonissi and Agios Pavlos, and the Paximadia Islands with their barbecue cruises.
Eat well.
Live slowly.
Cretan food is among the healthiest and most flavourful in the Mediterranean, and in the villages of South Crete you eat it as it was meant to be eaten — simply, freshly and without a great deal of fuss. The tavernas along the harbour in Agia Galini serve grilled fish pulled from the sea that morning, dakos topped with local tomatoes and aged myzithra cheese, slow-cooked lamb with wild herbs from the hillsides, and the island's exceptional olive oil over everything.
A short drive inland opens up another Crete entirely. The mountain village of Spili, with its famous lion-headed fountain and plane-shaded square, is worth an afternoon. Melambes, just above Agia Galini, offers a genuine glimpse of unhurried Cretan village life. The beautiful town of Rethymno — with its Venetian old town, Ottoman mosques and fortress — is an hour north and worth an evening.
- Fresh seafood at the harbour
- Traditional Cretan mezze
- Local olive oil & cheeses
- Raki & Cretan wine
- Spili village — 30 min
- Rethymno old town — 60 min
- Regular live music — in the village
- Matala Beach Festival — June
A long season.
Every month its own reward.
South Crete has one of the longest holiday seasons of any Greek destination — typically May through October. The Libyan Sea keeps temperatures mild even into autumn, and the variety across the season is remarkable. Galini Breeze is open from May to the end of October.
Wildflowers, empty beaches, green gorges. Best for hiking, history and Easter celebrations. Galini Breeze reduced rates available.
Warm sea, long evenings, lively village. The Matala Beach Festival in June is unmissable. Peak season begins but south Crete stays manageable.
The hottest month and the most vibrant. Book early — Galini Breeze fills quickly. The private pool at the resort becomes essential.
Arguably the finest time to visit. The sea is at its warmest, the crowds thin, the light turns golden. A favourite of returning guests.
Straightforward to reach.
Worth every kilometre.
Agia Galini is well connected to both of Crete's main airports. Most guests fly into Heraklion (HER) — the island's main international hub — and drive south through spectacular mountain scenery. The drive takes around 75 minutes. Renting a car is strongly recommended: the south coast's beaches, villages and archaeological sites are best explored at your own pace.
Galini Breeze can arrange airport transfers directly — just aks us after booking your stay. Ferry connections to Crete run year-round from Piraeus (Athens) to both Heraklion and Chania.
